Burrowing Owls:
Conservation status has been declining for many years, owing to prairie dog and ground squirrel control programs, also habitat loss, accidental mortality(many are killed by cars). Now considered endangered or threatened in some areas.
Small long legged owl that hunts on the ground during the day.Burrowing Owls are small, sandy colored owls with bright-yellow eyes.
Often, burrowing owls nest and root in the burrows made by squirrels, a strategy also used by rattlesnakes. When threatened the owl retreats to the burrow and produces rattling and hissing sounds similar to that of a rattlesnake
Cowboys sometimes called these owls "howdy birds," because they seemed to nodding greeting from the entrances to their burrows in prairie-dog towns.
